  1. Introduction

The Iraqi Cultural Festival 2025, titled “Kahramana,” was successfully organised by the Australian Iraqi Forum (AIF) on 7 September 2025. The festival aimed to celebrate Iraqi cultural heritage, promote social cohesion, and strengthen intercultural understanding within the broader Victorian community. Drawing inspiration from Kahramana, a well-known symbol in Iraqi folklore representing generosity, resilience, and cultural identity, the festival provided a rich platform for artistic, literary, and social expression.

The event brought together community members, artists, cultural groups, poets, and elected representatives in a vibrant celebration of Iraq’s diverse cultural traditions, reflecting the multicultural values of Victoria and Australia.

  1. Official Proceedings and Opening

The festival commenced with the arrival of guests, followed by the official opening at 4:10 PM.

The proceedings were professionally facilitated by the Masters of Ceremony, Mr Ahmed Radhi (AIF Executive Member) and Ms Dina Kamal, who guided the audience through the program.

The opening ceremony featured the Australian National Anthem and the Iraqi National Anthem, symbolising unity, respect, and the strong connection between the Iraqi community and Australia.

Introductory remarks were delivered by Dr Khairy Majeed, President of the Australian Iraqi Forum. In his address, Dr Majeed highlighted the importance of cultural preservation, community engagement, and the role of festivals such as Kahramana in fostering inclusion and mutual understanding.

  1. Official Guest Speeches

The festival was honoured by the presence of distinguished elected representatives who addressed the audience, expressing their support for multicultural initiatives and the Iraqi community:

  • Mr Basem Abdo, Federal Member of Parliament for Calwell
  • Ms Bronwyn Halfpenny, State Member of Parliament for Thomastown
  • Mr Evan Mulholland, Member for the Northern Metropolitan Region

All speakers acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Iraqi community to Australia’s social and cultural fabric and commended the Australian Iraqi Forum for its leadership in community development and cultural promotion.

  1. Cultural and Artistic Performances

The festival showcased a diverse and engaging cultural program:

  • Folklore Dabka and traditional Iraqi songs performed by the Ashur Folklore and Dance Group, accompanied by E2K DJ Karam, energised the audience and highlighted traditional Iraqi rhythms and movements.
  • Folk poetry and traditional Iraqi chants (Hossat) provided a powerful expression of heritage, identity, and communal pride.
  • Artist and singer Youssef Al-Wathiq captivated attendees with Iraqi songs performed to the melodies of the Oud, offering a refined and authentic musical experience.
  • A theatrical play titled “Wildness” was presented, adding a dramatic and reflective artistic element that explored cultural and social themes relevant to the Iraqi experience.
  1. Community Engagement and Social Interaction

Attendees enjoyed a scheduled break that encouraged socialisation and community connection. Light refreshments were served, including Iraqi dates, traditional Iraqi sweets, cooked chickpeas (Lablabi), and tea and coffee, allowing guests to engage informally while experiencing traditional Iraqi hospitality.

  1. Traditional Costume Show and Poetry

The program continued with a traditional costume show, featuring participants from the Assyrian Women Gathering Group, the Iraqi Cultural Group Association (ICGA), and the Ashur Folklore and Dance Group. The presentation was accompanied by live music on the Tanbura, performed by Dr Bara Al-Rubban, showcasing the diversity of Iraqi cultural attire and musical traditions.

This was followed by a poetry segment, including:

  • A poem titled “They Said Iraq” by media personality Mr Anwar Abbas, offering a heartfelt reflection on Iraq’s identity and history.
  • A poem by the respected poet and AIF Executive Member, Mr Ahmed Radhi, further enriching the literary and cultural dimension of the festival.
  1. Recognition, Celebration, and Conclusion

The festival included the presentation of certificates and appreciation gifts to acknowledge contributors, performers, and supporters.

In recognition of Father’s Day, a special celebration was held, featuring a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony by the oldest and youngest fathers in the audience, highlighting intergenerational respect and family values.

The evening concluded with a lively dance interlude, featuring Arabic, Kurdish, and Assyrian Dabka to the rhythms of E2K DJ Karam, with performances by the Ashur Folklore and Dance Group, bringing together diverse communities in a shared celebration.

The festival continued for five hours and formally concluded at 9:00 PM, leaving attendees with a strong sense of cultural pride, unity, and community connection.

  1. Conclusion

The Iraqi Cultural Festival 2025 “Kahramana” was a resounding success, achieving its objectives of cultural celebration, community engagement, and social inclusion. Through music, dance, poetry, theatre, and shared traditions, the festival highlighted the richness of Iraqi culture and its positive contribution to Victoria’s multicultural landscape. The support of the Victorian Government’s Multicultural Festivals Small Grants Program was instrumental in delivering this meaningful and inclusive community event.

These words of welcome are spoken in the main languages of Iraq: Arabic, Syriac, and Kurdish — reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity of this nation.

Let me begin by respectfully acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather today – the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. I pay my respect to their Elders – past, present, and emerging.

I also pay respect to all elders in this gathering today.

I also wish to acknowledge the presence of our distinguished guests today including:

  • Dr. Belal Mahmood Ateya – Consul General of Iraq in Melbourne
  • Mr. Basem Abdo – Federal Member of Parliament for Calwell
  • Ms. Bronwyn Halfpenny – State Member of Parliament for Thomastown
  • Mr. Evan Mulholland – Member for Northern Metropolitan Region

I would also like to acknowledge the presence of many community and religious leaders, and friends and supporters from the wider community.

Your presence today means a great deal.

It is a great honour to stand before you today and welcome you to the third Iraqi Cultural Festival which we mamed ”Kahramanah”.

KAHRAMANA refers to the iconic figure from One Thousand and One Nights, known for her courage and outsmarting the forty thieves in the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

Kahramana represents female intelligence, bravery, and loyalty.

We named the festival Kahramana to honour women in our community, and to acknowledge our heritage and history.

Dear friends

At its heart, this festival is a celebration of Iraqi culture — a vibrant heritage shaped over thousands of years, from the cradle of civilisations in ancient Mesopotamia (the land between the two rivers) to the modern, resilient Iraq we know today.

Through wars, conflicts, and hardship, the Iraqi spirit has remained strong — marked by its creativity, resilience, and deep-rooted identity.

Today is more than just a cultural event.

It is a celebration of the multicultural spirit of Australia — a reminder that Australians from diverse backgrounds can honour and celebrate their roots and heritage while building a shared future together.

I take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who helped bring this event to life.

This festival was made possible by a small grant through the Victorian Government’s Multicultural Festivals and Events Program, as well as contributions of few individuals within our community.

We also appreciate the ongoing support of North Star Health Care and Arabic Welfare to our various cultural activities.

We are also grateful to Mr. Firas Pak, Director of AUA TV, for his efforts in covering and documenting our activities including this festival.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all participants and performers who contributed to the activities of the festival.

Special thanks go to Mr. Farouq Sabri, whose dedication and commitment brought him all the way from New Zealand to both direct and perform in the play.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to members of the Executive Committee of the Australian Iraqi Forum, whose collaboration and commitment have made today’s event possible.

I invite them to join me on stage.

Starting with the two ladies in our team, our two sisters:

  • Ms. Amal Hanoosh
  • Ms. Rawiya Alshekhly

and then from the youngest and energetic member in the team

  • Mr. Ahmed Radhi
  • Mr. Salah Saif Murad
  • Mr Samer Alsaffar
  • Dr. Ramzi Shukri
  • Rabi Elias Mansur
  • Dr. Faleh Francis – Vice President and Chair of the Festival Organising Committee

Dear brothers and sisters and friends

Let us honour our shared heritage and the values of community, resilience, and cultural pride that bring us together.

We now declare the official opening of the festival.

I encourage you to take a moment to look at the exceptional artwork created by two respected artists, Mr. Salah Saif Murad and Mr. Amer Isho.

Thank you all — and enjoy the evening.
